Gastown
Gastown is the area where Vancouver
was founded in 1867. It is located east of the main downtown business district,
near Chinatown. It was originally called Gassy's after the saloon proprietor
Gassy Jack Deighton. After the great fire of 1886 the area was rebuilt and
renamed Gastown.
Gastown is an area of Vancouver which started the "save
the heritage of the city" drive in the 60's.
In the late 60's and 70's
Gastown was one of the preimier shoping areas of Vancouver.
Gastowns
ambience faded during the 80's and early 90's however during recent years
strong efforts by local businesses and the City of Vancouver have generated new
interest in Gastown.
The western entrance starts at the nothern end of
Richards Street, an easy 3 block walk from the Canada Place Cruise
Terminal. The eastern entrance is at Main Street. The main road is Water
Street which is joined by Alexander Street further east. Both streets are
one way with traffic flowing from east to west.
Gastown combines all
types of shopping and dining opportunities. Several popular night clubs are
also located in this area.
Notable things to see in Gastown: The
Steam Clock located at the north-west corner of Water and Cambie
Streets. The statue of Gassy Jack located on the south-west corner of Water
and Carral Streets |
